TRADE WITH CANADA.
SUBSTANTIAL ;GROWTH.
jr (By. Telegraph—Press Association.), ' J' ■-'•''. Auckland, January 10. The Canadian Trade Commissioner. (Mr. W,. Beddoe), in the course of an interviow, gave some interesting, particulars rcspect.ing.'trade between Canada and New Zealand durinj the past, year. •'"...' 'In response: to .a question as to how trndo had progressed between the two countries last year,' Mr. Beddoe replied that during'l9l2 trade between Canada and New Zealand had developed in a very, satisfactory "manner. .■ '"Last year there were carried to New', Zealand," he proceeded,, "by the Cana-: .dian"Eastern monthly service 18,348 tons, of goods.' This service is subsidised by the Canadian Government at .£2OOO per month to. send a monthly boat from Montreal in summer, and 'from St. John in. winter, Duringthe previous year, 22,281 tons were carried by the same line,; so that fast year's trade represented, an increase of, 60«7 tons.
"This," he continued, "is not the total tonnage, as a largo quantity of freights from Canada destined for New Zealand isjshipped by ; the Atlantic Transport Company via New York and' London. ; I confidently look forward during 1913 to; an expansion in'trade both vi& Eastern Ca.nada and via Montreal.- To relieve the situation in respect to freights from' Vancouver ,to New: Zealand, arrangements are being made to; put on extra'cargo boats to! meet the freight demands. During the last calender year thero was shipped from Auckland 'to Vancouver' 57,955 boxes <21j,977Jcwt.) .of butter.' In addition to this, there wris shipped thousands of sacks of hides, skins,'and pelts, a large quantity of wool and /kauri gum, ■ and also onions, peas, and eggs, the.eggs .being in the nature of an experimental shipment,'which proved very' satisfactory.'Quantities of beef were also sent from Txew Zealand, and this is only the beginning of an important industry. The figures'given do not roprcserit the total business'" done between New Zealand and Canadn, because large quantities-of. all commodities, but principally butter, were shipped during the year io Vancouver, via San Francisco, for the reason that the Vansiopver boats had not sufficient space to fill, the ; denlan<ls' of Canadian custom. It is a feature worthy .'of note that the boats of the-seryice from; Vancouver to New Zealand,' arid from' Eastern. Canada to New Zealand;' have' proved to.be utterly incapable of dealing .with the freight offered. In'the case of Vancouver, when the 13,500-ton. Niagara, the largest boat thit will have ever crossed the. Equator, is in commission for ".the. service'the shortage of space will be overcome. •Until, .however,. rfew Zealand, exporters realise the importance of utilising tile Eastern'• Canadian : service now.'.pro- ; vided free by. the Canadian Government td send New Zealand produce to Eastern Canada, you' will not have received 'the fullest advantage : ; from the satisfactory fiscal conditions which now obtain between Canada arid Now Zealand.
' ' "I am very pleased," he said, in conclusion, "ivith the growth of trade between the two Domiriions. • One of .the strongest bonus, that binds nations- to-, gethor is this bond. From this I.deduct that-the more business' Canada' does with New Zealand, and the latter country with Canada, the closerwillbe united the largest, arid the smallest ..of 'the. overseas Dominions.".' :/: : i '.".'• .-•■ V .
