. Tho.'Makara County Council met yesterday, Mr. F. T. Moire presiding. Messrs. Haggerty, Taylor, Eastwood, Monaghnn,, .and-Monk,were also present. ~ ,".'■■ .•,.' i Permission was asked by the chairmtm to hold over, a motion of which he had given notice 'for'-a month. ; The motion Was: "That' in vieiv' of tho council's: inability to obtain assistance' from tho Government, and- the Wellington City. Council in the matter of making.the Ngaha-uranga Gdrgo Road fit and safe for traffic, immediate steps be taken .to erect a toll gate .'on this roa<l. in!order to, provide tho cost of ,thc necessary; improvements.". j : .Speaking.in-regard.. to, this .jnotion; ; the .'chairman stated that he had' interviewed some of. thelargest ratepayers of thedis;trict,'with o, viewtoaeoertaining whether they; agree' to' the ' creation of.; a ispecial.'rating, area,- so ' that borrcwing might; be undertaken in order to carry, on the work';' So' far" he' : had received no.definite' reply,, but he expected one by'the end of tho month, and consequently he desired that consideration' of his motion be deferred for a month. Ho wished it \inderstood.that he was not .holding matters over because of threats that, had been made by! some people, who opposed the. toll-gato proposal. ;The' larger rate'p'ayers of the district considered that.they should .not, bo obliged ; to ; pay "o. greater part of of the toad when a num-ber-of the,'smaller used the jroad more: ' In conclusion, he said that jthe road,'- in- its 'present condition, was idangorbus, and.would have to;be improved. i The 'council granted tho necessary, leave, and the ; chairman moved: "That immediate steps be taken. to improve the Ngahauranga Gorgo Eoad, and that eon's tender of. .£Bl3 16s. bo accepted for the work.'of constructing. a., tunnel to divert the Ngahauranga stream'below the abattoirs." ; He. said. that, as : the .Government and'the"City Council had' refused them help, they would have to do the work themselves. The necessary money Would have to be found either by special loan over -a rating area, or ,by erecting a toll gate,,.,. ;-:"':. •■■. The clerk stetodin. Teply that the necessary list had really been gazetted, and .the inspector had been supplied with the reference in the Gazette. However, the matter waß left in the hands; of the clerk.
