SWIMMING.
TBi "Splash."] THAT BROKEN MINUTE AGAIN) January: 18—Thorndon Club Carnival. January 22—Wairarapa ' Club's Carnival, at the Lake, Park Oval, Masterton. January. £s—Swifts5 —Swifts Club Carnival. February 22—Wellington Club Carnival. March B—Old Boys' Club Carnival. Did Solomons Really Do It? . Respecting the paragraph that appeared in this column las-t week concerning the timing of Solomons, Mr. G. S. Hill (the Contro's official time-kcoper) has' this to ■say I .— ' "The gross time for the heat was 72 7-ssoc, and according to the centre's official programme Solomons, .who - was 6cratch, _ was • to Btrat llseo. after the limit. man, , If the handicapping times were strictly adhered to it naturally' follows that Solomons's time was 61 2-sseo. It seems, however, that a coinpeliitor whose namo was not included in the original list for the heat, also started in tho race, and ho i$ believed to have received 14soc. from Solomons. If that is correct, then Solomons, nccording to my watch, did'the distance in 58 2-ssec." Some Swift Club Notes. Tho following is tho Swifts Club programlno up to tho end of tho season:— January if, 21, and 28, Smith Cup events; February 18, 100 yds. breast stroke hnnnicap; February 25,; 220 yds. handicap; March 4, 410 yds. handicap; March 11, one mile handicap; March 18, 150 yds. teams race (threo men); April 1, 75vds. Autumn' Stakes (an event in which a . trophy to tho value of tho entrance fees is griven). . • '■ ' A. M, Smith, of .the Swifts. Club, who lately journeyed couth with tho Australian swimmorj, ."m»d» hJLa. presenoe
felt" at the Lyttelton regatta by winning tho ■ 76yds. handicap event. C. V. Fordham, of tho same olub', was swimming in the Australian team when it won its event at Lyttelton, and also when it won in Christchurch.
One Hundred and thirty-two Competitors. Manly again! A new record range-up for the cluu'9 Christmas Morning Handicap. No less than 132 started, necessitating eighteen preliminary and six penultimate heats as well, of course, as the final. Manley's previous high-water mark in musters at tho post was 108—on Christmas Day last year. There's something in records of any sort—they take a lot of reaching these the Toll that Can supply 132 actual competitors, not entries only, must belong to a strong, healthy body, and such club health only comes of first-class management. Tho distance was 50yds., which served to expose Cecil Healy's fitness for big things now near at hand. Cecil streaked over tho course 'in 24 4-ssec.—a fino performance indeed for one so recently on a long sea ■trip. C. D. Bell's 26- 2-sseo. and G. AVyld's 27 4-ssec. discovered a couple of comers whom this paper pats on the book and advises strongly to keep going.— Sydney "Referee." The Wairarapa Club.
Tho Wairarapa - Amateur Swimming Club's carnival is to take plaoeon the lake, Park Oval, at Masterton, on January 22. It is understood that an attractive programme has been arranged, and entries are now being received. 1
