THE WOMAN DENTIST.
, There are not many' women dentists, and this though it cannot bo said-that anything 4ike the prejudice -that existed against, the woman doctor has ever been roused against them. That there is an opening forthem is evident from the fact that-the Royal Free Hospitat/the London School of Medicine'for. 'Women) have received the-promise of'?. certain amount of money to encourage women in this pro-' fession, and have drawn up a scheme to be followed out.'at the school (8 'Hunter Street,-W.G.)j; and attire National Dental Hospital, Great-Portland Street, W. - .'-Medical inspection of school children has called particular/attention to the need for better care of the teeth.of tho 'school child, and, as women havo been'appointed ■to many of the posts going 'in connection with medical' inspection .of schools, and have contributed much valuable, information in their'reports' io the education authorities,''it'seems only fair that if any dental clinics aro started they should have sdmo of the appointments. Drawing teeth is not the only' thing in dentistry, and those'who airily assert that women, Hare not sufficient strength for this kind of work forget that the mechanical part of dentistry calls for training of a vet-y special kind, and for a deljcacy of touch and an* accuracy which is a special feature of women's work. The Modern Tendency in Dentistry* And the modern tendency in. dentistry is entirely against the ruthless and reckless tooth, drawing, which was such a featuro of the old-fashioned dentist. Tooth-saving. ; is the aim of the.dentist of to-day, and as ccowuny is one of the few virtues we are allowed, even by , our critics, to possess, the future; of the woman dentist. v:ould seem fairly bright. •
There are not rriany qualified women dentists in.England, nnd several of those actually in practice have succeeded their Fathers in the same profession, and have '••"■cured clients .at .once. - The Licenso in Dentistry of the "Royal College of Surgeons in; England ,is now open to women, and this fact will probably cause more to 'enter the profession than did in the past. The conrso covers five years, and the combined fee's at the London (R.F.H.) School of Medicine for Women and the Natloml Dental Hospital are about JCIBO. Thcro is a new bursary for dental students at the Royal .Free Hospital of sixty pounds a year, of .which the first award will bo made this month (September).
