LETTER BY COMPANY, I BEFORE THE BOEOUGH COUNCIL. The Miramar Borough Council met last , evening, tlio Mayor (Mr. JI. N. M'Leod] presiding. Councillors Telford, Stowe, , Smitli, and Grieg were also present. *■ Tho principal matter dealt with was •h a letter from tlio Wellington Harbour x, Terries, Ltd., dealing with' the' council's ■application for an improved ferry eci'vice. Tho communication slates:—"A boat leaving Seatoun and Karaka Bay at about S J 7 a.m. ond leaving tho city about 6 p.m. id in addition to tlio present 6ervieo would >r mean tho employment, of an additional steamer, i.e., ono to run solely to Karafca Bay ajid Seatoun. Even then 6uch a steamer could not leavo tho 'city earlier ** than 6.25 p.m., after tho previous depary turo from town at 5.15. p.m. Again, such is a steamer would havo to be relieved from if timo to time for overhaul, slipping, etc, 8 _ In.6Ufcli circumstances,the cost to us in maintaining,the required running would bo littlo less .than it, ivould bo to vou,'did 38 you yourselves undertake the work, the I- ' tho only diiToreiioe suggesting itself tc o- us being in cost of management and pro, j. viding for a relief; steamer. Tho total v cost of running and maintaining such . c vessel as the Cobar on, the overtime ratef ■ necessary in ■. consequence -• of tho hours n mentioned by you would bo about X 305( [j per annum—depreciation, interest on cost, L 0 and proportion. of- office expenses would i amount to another ,£I3OO, A relief steamer, if chartered, would cost certainly not less than <£300. These' items total &• *£4650, which led us to express tho opin>t ion that it would mean a subsidy or W il to you, considerably in excess of whai you.'would feel justified in pacing, ; If, _ after this information, you . still' desire ™ us to submit a scheme to embrace the <1 running mentioned, wo shall bo pleased )f tq do'so. Councillor Bowie was granted leave of " absence.;: , . • ~. e A letter was received from Mr. T. W. r Youngj who asked tho council to release q nim- from his .contract . for .laying-'of stonoware sowers, from tho council, 1 and wtt'askinj for a refund of a,, deposit of • paid by. him to, tho council. His l. reason -for _ asking to bo', released 'fiom the contract was that he had, been misled as to the state of the road which ,he had to i deal .with.
