TAXI-CAB STRIKE.
, ——■ O -— THE MEN STILL OUT. By Teleeranh—Press Association—CoDyrJclit , London, January 7. The taxi-cab strike continues, ' Since it's commencement the ; federated: owners have lost =842,000 in fares. : CAUSE OF THE TROUBLE. The strike is a direct oonsequence of ail agreement, which was come to between the drivers and, owners as a.result of an award made' by the Conciliation Board last March. The price which the driver had to pay for his petrol was fixed at Bdper gallon,- and this price was arranged 6o as to compensate the proprietors for the. cost of handling the spirit after delivery. Clause 4 of the agreement made provision as to fluctuations in . price, wore to be regulated by the Conciliation Board. Aoting in conformity with this proviso, the Conciliation Board held . meetings to consider the fact that with the;new year the price of petrol would be seriously raised to the proprietors, and to determine the new price to tlio drivers. After a careful examination of the new contracts, which were frankly to the men's representatives by tho associated proprietors, it was unanimously agreed that the prico of petrol would have to be raised from Bd. to Is. Id. per. gallon under the provision of Clause 4 quoted above. The men contend that the prioe of petrol has advanced to a figure never contemplated by the arbitrators, or by'either party to the award, anil that if they pay the extra sd. per gallon they would nave to pay ally other figure, even though it swallowed nj nil their earnings. The men state that they cannot afford to have deducted front their weekly earnings as much as Bs., which the. alteration in price involves. Tho proprietors have insisted on holding the drivers to the precise terms of the award. There are aubut GOO taxi-cabs in London owned by their drivers, and these can apparently earn a good living, in spite of having to pay m much as Is. 4d. icr gallon for their petrol. London will thus not be entirely taxi-less.
