At the Flower Show, j Tho flowers yesterday tit the show wer« i wonderfully .fine, the • carnations being | exceptional in their colour and size,-and" indeed they were sotno of the best tlint havo been shown in Wellington. There was such a bewildering mass of beauty nnd colour that it was hard to find adjectives to express their many perfections. The sweet peas alone, in their infinite variety of colour and form, will long ; hold a pines in the mind, and especially tho exhibit shown by Mr. Treyothiclc. This occupied a table in the centre of the hall, ami consisted of a ccntre piece in the shape of an arch, of Henry Lekfords, surrounded on all sides with tall vases of peas of harmonising shades. Tho whole effect was most artistic, and had tho merit of showing of! the flowers to the best advantage. The carnations occupied tables to the left of tho sweet peas, and thesa in their colour and shape were .very beautiful. It is rathor late in the year for Toses, but those shown were very fino of their kiild, ,but of course not to be compared with tlwse that wore seen at the last rose show on November 12.- The I ladies' decorated tables wero quite a feature of tho room,'and one or two adorned with Iceland poppies, in their harmonising shades of. -white, tangerine,' and yellow, wero veTy lovely. Lady Liverpool, who was received by the president, Mr. llarcourt, and his daughter, after formally opening the show, remarked upon the pleasure it had given her to tee so many beautiful gardens since slid had been in New Zealand, and especially in Wellington, where tho garden sjiaco was so limited. Lady Liverpool wore a gown of figured silk foulard, and a brown hat, with blue plumes; Miss Harcourt's gown was of blue Shantung, with a.hat of the same shade. Among many present were Miss Ewen, •Mrs; and Miss Butts, Mrs. 15dwin, Mrs. Gorton, Miss Marchant, Mrs. Clifton, Mrs. Rankino-Brown, Mrs. and Miss Mas'soyi etc. ' ■ Yesterday afternoon Mrs. Birkett gave an afternoon tea in Miss Tendall's tearooms as la farewell to her sister, Miss Wedgewood, who is returning to England by the Oralva. The tables .wero beautifully' decorated with sweet peas in pale shades of heliotrope and pink'. Mrs. Birkett received in a dress of white embroidered muslin, nnd a large black' hat, with black feathers. Miss Wcdgewood's dress was of pink foulard, with a large champagne straw hat with bunches of pink and white forget-me-nots. Amongst the guests were: Mrs. W. Young, Mrs. John Blifndell, Mrs. Ponsonby, Mrs. RankineUrown, Mrs. Robertson, Miss Stafford, Mrs. Malcolm Ross, Missea ■ Cock, Mrs. Bristowo,'Mrs. Taylor, Mrs. A. Williams,' ; Mrs. and Miss Ward. ■ - Mr. and Mrs. Hollings, from Masterton, afe spending some time at the seaside, and arc staying at Day's Bay House. Mrs. W. Giesen (Feilding) is staying at Paekakariki. . ■ > Mrs. B. E. M. Vavasour and Misses P. and B. Vavasour, of Blenheim, are passengers from Wellington, to London by iI.JJ.S. Ruapehu, whioh sails to-hlorrow .morning. Mrs. Wynyard,'wifo of! the chief officer of the New Zealand Shipping Company's Paparoa, leaves Wellington for London by the Ruapehu to-morrow; Mrs. Henry Blundcll. and Mr. Garnet Blundell, whj have been on a visit to Colombo, were passengers from Sydney to Wellington by the Maurtganui yesterday.
