GRIERSON WINS. THE FINAL GAME WITH HICKS. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.J Nelson, January '7. The Chess' Congress was brought-to a conclusion to-day, when J. C. Griorson, of Auckland, who defeated. Gyles played off with G. Hicks of No.pier.. . Grierson adopted the Carokann defence, with, which his opponent did' not sccin familiar. After a stubborn defence Hicks had to sacrifice his bishop to prevent his opponent queening a pawn. The gatno at this stage seemed like a draw, but Grierson, sacrificing a pawn which he had been trying to queen, played - a splendid finish, and Hicks resigned at' the 68th move, after a game lasting seven hours. Grierson won the championship in J902. THE CHAMPION. ° Mr! J. C. Grierson, the champion, is 58 years of age, and is sometimes referred to as the "preux chevalier" of New Zealand chess. He secured the .cbampionship at the tournament' held at Dunedin in 11)02, In 1909, at Auckland, ho, tied, for, first place with Mr. John Mason,, but . lost in the play-off. His olub chcss record is a capital ono. , The champion is a native of Cheshire, and an. accountant by profession.
