The first game of tho triangular matih J to decide tho" chess championship was - played to-day between Grierson and Gyles. t Grierson o'poned with the Queen's Gaml bit, which Gyles declined. Gyles forced I an early exchange, and at move 19 Grier- ' ' son allowed Gyles to win a pawn, which ' Gyles immediately made a passed pawn. 1 .Grierson made an attack on Gyles's king position with l his queen and _a knight, and -' Gyles,'in meeting this, sacrificed a pawn, f thinking to win a knight, but in following a up this idea ho neglected his defence, and e was mated on the 23rd move. Grierson plays Hicks to-morrow, and if f , he wins willsecure the championship, but g there are,many possible eventualities, and 1, the championship may not bo decided for r sevoral day 9., h The tournaiment prizes were presented d at a social to-night. •','-'
