PEA-GROWING.
: ! (To.tjie'• Editor.):! . Sir,—l have boen in New Zealand for about three weeks, and havo had a talk with a few pea-growers, who grow peas, by contract for. English seed-iirms,. for , about As. Gd. per bushel. Now, \ these yory poas aro sold to market gardeners 'and farmers nt Upwards of. .£3 per bushel, leaving a. magnificent profit to the seed merchant of £2 15s. per bushel. I know, there is the freight to take off that, and tho dressing of the seed. ■ I defy any of tho large seed merchants to contradict this statement. Anyone wishing to sec tho price they charge for the seed pons grown in New Zealand should send to 1 their friends in England to.got them a catalogue, and send it out to thorn. Now, I think this oould bo altered by the Farmers' tions selling them; direct to. tho smaller seedsmen, who havo to buy them through these large 60cd merchants. Of course I know there are other things grown, for these seedsmen bssides pons, and they; get a vory largo, profit on alii these things. Perhaps • your readers will think why don't tho English and. Scottish farmers grow peas for themselves. ■"My answer is they cannot very often, as the weather is, as a rule, ! too wot to harvest them in ordinary seasons. This next year's seed peas, oto., will bo dearer than sver, as England has had one of the wettest suinmors on record..—l am, oto., . J..W. COX. : Blenheim. • ,:
