A GERMAN WATERWAY.
Tho German Government Is considering very closely tho question of building' a canal linking tho Ehine to tho North Sea. Several 6cbemes have been before it, tho most practical being that of Hcrr Josef Eosemayor, <v, leading engineer of. Cologne. The l ■projected canal would begin at Wiosdorf, near Cologno on the right banks of the Rhine, would run parallel to tho Hver as f«' as DuisbUrg, and thonba in a straight )ino to Ditznm, near Emd<m_, on the North . Sen. The whole lengtn would be, 174 miles, the average depth 23 feet, and tho average breadth 148'fcot. The cost of construction is estimated at ; ,£12,000,000. The principal argument in favour of this canal is that it will allow, tho IThine Rtjamira to reach the ports of Northern England and of the Scandinavian countries much quicker than is now possible. It is calculated that tho voyage from Cologne to Emdcn, and back, by the new canal can easily bo made by an ordinary Ehino steamer in 70 houre, .whilo tho same eteamer, taking tho only available rdute via Eotterdam, now takca 132 hours for the samo journey. .
