WIRELESS AT THE CHATHAMS.
/ IN IMMEDIATE STAET. Mt. W. Fumess, workshops foreman to tho Post and Telegraph ' Department, left by the Hlmitangi last' evening for tho Chatham Islands to mate preliminary arrangements in connection with the erection of a wireless station. A gang of workmen and material for tho buildings will bq sent down later., 'Tho hnilding, which is to bo of wood, will be framed ot "Wellington, and all tho'parts will bo sent down ready made, so that as little time as possible may bo consumed in bnilding operations at tho Wands. It is hoped that the buildings of tho station .will 'bo completed by the middle of the year, but it is impossible as yet to say now long it will take to instal tho wirelesi equipment. ' The Chathatns Station will be of 2J kiloIWats, so that it will be graded as a low- ' power station. It will bo capablo of maintaining constant communication with .Wellington, and nntlor unusually favourable weather conditions will bo obi© .ito exohango signals with tho elation at tho Macquarios. , The Chathnms Station is intended primarily for tho benefit of ship, ping, and it is not expected that it -will bo used to any extont as a medium for commercial communications, .though the fishing establishments on tho islands may occasionally find it convenient to com- , imihioate 'with. their markets. The wireless masts at the Chothams ■will stand on an eminence 150 foot above sea-level, and will rise above this another .■l5O feet. One of, the masts,,owing to o dip in tho ground, will measure 165 feot from top to base. The Wellington wireless masts are 1100 feet abovo eea-lovel.
