MR. POYNTON'S FAREWELL.
A DEPARTMENTAL GATHERING. Mr, J. TV. Poynton, who recently resumed tho position of Secretary to the Treasury on account of ill-health, and has Binoa boon appointed stipendiary magistrate at Palmorston North, said farewell to the offioora of his lato Department at a social gathering in' Godber's rooms, Lambton, Quay, last night. Tho host and hosteos of tho evening were Mr, and Mis. Poynton. There was a very largo mutter of tho officers of tho Treasury Department, including those attached to its National Provident; Fund, Uriondly Societies','and ' 'Advances, branches. Oneof tho guests,wag Mr. G. F. 0, Campbell, tho newly-appoint-ed Secretary to tho Treasury. In all there were about 150 officers present and n fow ladies. t i At tho request 'of the host, no toasts , were proposod, and long speeches 'were ' omitted from tho prograimno. A nunibor of entertaining musical items were rendered during tho evening. Mr. Poynton, in a brief speech, introduced Mr. Campbell to tho officers whom lo wai bidding farewell and in doing so highly praised tho manner in which they had worked under.his control. 'During his. Borvicoin tho Treasury, ho stated, ho had como in'contact lvith some of the finest men Thorn ho had over known in his life, land ho hoped that "whon any of them, whether they were oadpts or seniors, went to Palmerston North, "they would not fail to pay him a visit. ' Whan ho concluded, Mr. Poynton. was saluted with the strains of ' For He's a Jolly Good Fellow," and tho eamo compliment was psid to Mt. Campbell whon ho Sn turn spoke, a few words to the assembled officers. Mr. Campbell 6aid that he lad. that day said "Good-bye"'to tho bfticors of his former Department, and could only hops that ho would find as fino a body of men in tho Treasury. Both Mr. Poynton and Mr. Campbell emphasised tho necessity of maintaining a spirit of esprit do corp3, and Mr. Ppynton suggested that tho different branches of tho Treasury should jointly sot up a committee to organise periodical eocial gatherings As the gat Win» dispersed each officer shook hands with his host and hostess. Mr. Poynton takes up his duties at the Palmerston North S.M. Court on Monday text. i
