FROZEN MEAT TRADE.
BAS THE LIMIT BEEN BEACHEDP ': Commenting oh. the figures recently published by the New Zealand Stock Department, the "Pastoralists* Review", says it looks as if the Dominion were approaching her maximum export of ffozon'meat, not because the country is" near the limit of its stock-carrying capacity, for there are still very considerable areas of both , bush and fern country to bring in, a sensible- portion of which, is first : clas3 pastoral country, but ratboT becauso of the groat'expansion of tho dairyingun- ' dustry, and in.a lpsser degree by the increased local consumption by the increasing population. This condition of affairs • applies almost entirely to the North Island.: The South: Island productiveness has already pretty well' arrived at' its limit, although there are considerable areas country in tho Nelson dis- , ti'ict ana.tho.WcstiCoast which some day .frill" bo. grassed, but which; taken ail round, is not of rich quality. Beearding . the opening-up'of the Native lands,'thoy are for'the most part already in profitable occupation.' Tho "oponing-up" of ' which thero is so much talk really refers: • to the acquisition for closer settlement; which with a sound freehold titlo would induce better working, and. consequently .slightly, heavier carrying capacity.' Tho present price ht -which Now Zealand fattening property is changing hands leaves absolutely nothing for the grazier, puro and simple, and therefore ho is being replaced by the dairy farmer.
