NOTES AND COMMENTS.
, TBt Glencoe.l A special horso train is being requisitioned to bring back tho "foreign" race-, horses that competed at Ellerslio. This is the result of- the outcry-raised last Cup meeting, when several trainers had the annoying experience of having to walk their horses into Auckland, and, after getting them loaded, wero told that they could not get away till tho following day. - . Waipaku lightened up e. great deal after her races at Awapnni, and she looked very worn when at tho barrier for tho Marton Cup, in w.hich she .finished 'well back. The bay mare has now an unsightly front joint, and may not stand tip to racing much longer. Tho defeat of Bronzo in ■ the A.R.C. Handicap at Ellerslio on Now Year's' Day was a 6overe blow to followers of the Highden stable, who sent the mare out as first favourite, only to see her' run a Eoor race, and finish at the tail of tho eld. Tho luck of the stable presided over by G. Price is just now, in common with many other leading stables, at a low ebb, and it is hard to see an animal that will' retrieve its fortunes. Adelicia made a very good showing in tho Juvenilo Handicap at Awapuni, and looked like a. winner passing the stewards' stand. Sho may bo the first of the Highden team to have her number hoisted on 'top by tho the judge. ' _ ' There is no doubt now. which is tho best two-year-old of the year. The honour certainly belongs to Soltano, winner of the. Foal Stakes and Royal Stakes, at Ellerslio. It was thought, after tho firstnamed event had been run 7 that Soltano might have been lucky to beat Mowbray, as tho latter got a very bad'run, but Mr. Lowry's colt dispelled this.idea on Thursday, when he again finished in front of the Ricearton-traincd' animal, ■ and also beat Bon ..Rove. To finish in front of tho last-named over six furlongs at in lrain. Msec, stamps tho Souit colt as being of the first class. It is on the cards that 'J.'II. Cameron will shortly take another team "to Melbourne, and of ite members will be Seatondale—tho Marton Cup winner—and the maiden St. Elmn. 1 The latter is.by St. Ambrose from that good mare Maude. He' is a big- powerful horse that should improve with racing. .That useful maro Fashion Plato'was allowed ■ to pay a better .price than was expected .in tho Bracelet' at Marton, owing to one of her front joints bearing evidence of,having had a plaster of Paris bandage on it, and also because it was) reported that she had dono no track work sinca racing at Awapuni. Trainer Attwood had her in great condition, and she fairly cantered hofno in lmin. 49sec, which, under her big weight, was a good gallop. -..■-, ' With tho closo of the Oamaru meeting practically:the whole of the holiday meetings aro concluded, and, there is/nothing special to -engage the attraction of racegoers until' the Wellington Cup- meeting opens on January 22. The appearance of the. weights for the big race and Telegraph Handicap will be eagerly awaited, and interest in the events named will not lessen until their-decision on the opening day of the meeting.' ■ i '
