Ivnox, an engine-driver in the employ of the North Eastern Railway Company; has been suspended for a month for overrunning signals. ■/. This is the second time that Knox has ' been dealt with by the i North Eastern Railway Company on disciplinary grounds./ On the first occasion (early in December), when he -was rednced in grade on account. of:a charge;of drunkenness, the. railway men : resisted any interference with their private Jives, and decided to strike until Kuox was reinstated. The company '. had reduced him to the position of pilot-driver', contending that this was necessary to protect the public, is the company would have no answer if'there was an accident, after a man had l>een convicted for drunkenness. The strike spread, to the Tyneside dockers, and coal miners were also affected, 20,000 being, out. After conferences, and after a magistrate declaring that Knox was not really drnnk, a settlement was arrived at, and Knox was reinstated. The strike cost the. railway company .£50,000, and the. coal and shipping £1,000,000. Fines imposed on the strikers ' aggregated ,£7OOO.
