The well-known' ship Loch Garve, 1712 tons, has been chartered to load roofing tiles at Marseilles for Auckland and Wellington.. The Loch Garve, which was formerly owned in Liverpool, loaded wool at Wellington about five. years ago, under cliaxter to Mr. G. H. Scales, for London. Since then she has changed hands, and is now flying the Italian flag. The ship Yallori, which left Marseilles on September 17, with a cargo of tiles for Dunedin and Lyttelton, is now 101 days out, and is expected to arrive at the southern port within tho next two weeks. The Yallori will probably reach Lyttelton about the end of February.

After completing dischargo of her Westport coal at Dunedin the Union Company's Pukaki will lay up for overhaul and survey.

Cabled advices from London to Sydney ten days ago reported .that the freight market was active. Charters arranged inoluded a sailing ship to toad wheat at a West Australian port in March- next, for the United Kingdom or Continent, at 355. 6d. per, ton-, another from Adelaide in, January at 355. 6d. per and ono from Melbourne in January at 355. per ton. Those rates represent a drop of 3s. to 3s. 6d. per ton -as oompared with previous charters.

The Amerioan four-masted schooner Robert R. Hind, which sailed from Gray'e Harbour, Wash., U.S.A., on October 24. is now sixty-sevon days out, and should arrive at Lyttelton at any time now. She has 750,000 feet of Oregon pine to dlßchargo at the southern o port. An agitation has been begun in Japan for the enforcement of a. loading regulation, owing to tho heavy losses which have occurred in Japanese waters recently. Of course,- all Japanese vessels on the European and other deep-water routes have a load line in conformance with the laws of the ports which they enter, |,nd the paucity of losses of vessels. on these routes as against the remarkably heavy losses against ooastint? vessels in to sonv;• extent explained by the strict observance of tho laws by the captains of the former vcssplb.

Mr. G. Scalea's ohartered steamer Olan Alpine arrived at Wellington from Port Pirie, ■ via. Picton-, yesterday morning, and berthed at the Glasgow Wharf. On inquiry 'at the-local office on Saturday it was not lmown whether the Clan Alpine' would leovo Wellington for London direct, or. proceed first to Lyttelton. She is expected to lift 10,500 bales of wool in New Zealand.
