& l-ssec. .NOTES ON THE RACING.

(By Our Special Reporter.) The Manawatu ■ Cup meeting was brought to a conclusion on Saturday, when an interesting card was run olf. The President's Handicap was contested by a useful field of ten houses, and the stake went to the Gisborno eportswan, Mr. 1\- Hall, whoso grey horse filira wag

sent to the post in perfect condition, by ,T. Lowe, and, after a fast-run race, ho scored handily from Seatondale. Herinia, who was better ior tho racing she had earlier in the meeting, won the Flying Handicap from a weak field. Peroneal, the favourite, was again unfortunate enough to get a bad passage, but she finished very well. Soveral of the finishes were very close, that of the Westbury Hack being particularly so, the placed norses finishing in a line. With the withdrawal of Rangikapua only five runners were left in the Whitmore Hack. Manakau finished up a better favourite than Queen o' Scots. Tho latter should have been suited by the distance, but her rider made too much use of her. She was in trouble a long way from home, and finished last. Prince Eddie made all the running, and stalling off a strong run by Manakau, he won by a length. Tho favourite was quite unable to concede 281b. to the winner, though handled in Oliver's usual style. Master Laddo was in a sour mood, and was tailed off nearly the whole way. The five runners in tho Hurdles wero evenly backed. Different tactics wero adopted with Flingot, and to-day he was ridden in behind, with the result that ho jumped muoti better, and this being so, it was only a matter of how 'much he would win by. Eiya and Aema rushed off in front, but at the fence at the bottom of the straight the mare stumbled badly, Meagher making a clever recovery, for which he was loudly applauded. Passing the stand the order was, Eiya, Leolanter, 'Whimper, and Flingot, but the.last-namefl I moved up at the six furlongs, and was in front down the back, where a faulty jump sent him to the rear. Whimper now took charge, but Flingot had too much pace, and won by a neck. Eiya was poor third. Aema was pulled up, and showed, signs of being hurt. Nukuatu and Lady Moutoa carried the bulk of the money in the Welter, which a"-ain went to Kina, after a fino race. The chestnut gelding, was ridden in behind, and finished full of running, though he was hard put at the finish to stall olt a challenge from Montreal. Lady Moutoa ran well but the weight stopped her at the finish. The favourite finishedSome very heavv speculation took place on tho President's Handicap, for which the whole of the acceptors went to the post. Merrivonia and Moutoa Girl were the host backed, and both ran very prominently, but at the finish Mira' galloped over everything, and won a fast-run race. Seatondale finished well in second place, but the others were , w.ell back. Moutoa Girl was ma<lo a'lot of uf-e of, and this contributed to her defeat, but Merrivonia was b?atcn on her merits. Bonny Boy and Goodwin Park made the' running till the five furlongs where the lead was taken by Moutoa Girl, but as stated her rider was hardlv able to do her justice. Alecto, Monologue, and Sylvia May were evenly backed in the five furlonas hack race. The last-mentioned was making-Iter first appearance at the meeting and showed her usual dash in leaving the barrier. Monologue closed on her at the bottom i of the straight, but Bell had a litHe in reserve, and after a very close finish she won by a narrow margin. No. Idee put in a good run in tho straight, but she failed to sustain it, and w-as stopping again at tho finish. Alecto and Sanguinary both met with' slight interference, but the result was not affected. After the eleventh-hour withdrawal- of Blub Lrrke, Herraia and Peroneal were both backed for a lot of money to win the Ki-wau Handicap. After, a counlo of false starts, caused by Piriwai, the fieldmoved off in a good line. Piriwai. on the outside, was prominent for a while, but Seaweed then took charge from Fcrmia, while Piriwai fell back to last place. Passing the half-mile post Peroneal put in a run, but was checked by some of tho others coming in on her. Hermia was first into tho straight, but Peroneal putin a good run and the Levin' raaro had to be ridden out to score. In the Christmas Hack Race heavy sup-, port was forthcoming for Mallard, who. was making his first appearance'at the meeting. He began smartly at the rise of the barrier and led across tho top with Black Lupin, while St. Bees brought up the rear. Down tho back General Madero made the pace from Moonrfinc' r.nd Ladv Nolan, with Mallard handy. ExceDt'ing that St. Bees moved up, tho order was the same round the turn, but once into tho straight Mallard .potuusp s on the inside, and in\a good finish beat' Lady Nolan.by a length- with the fastfinishing St. B»es right up. General Madero and Moondine next, while Overheard was tailed off. — " - The concluding event of the meeting— the Farewell Handicap—produced seven starters, Allegory being the. only defection. A real good start was effected. Mon Ami immediately rushed to the front, followed by Tlirave, Cork, and Montreal, The last-named ran up to the 'lender at. the five-furlong post, followed by Thrave, Cork, and Ma How. Threo furlongs from home Montreal 'took the lead and never being extended won very easily by half a dozen lengths. Thrave was a length better than Rill, with Cork and Matlow, who was slow to find his feet close up.
