THE STORY OF MY LIFE.
When I wag a child it was my greatest ambition to become a lion-tamer. But 'my mama wouldn't let me. And tlien it was my ambition to-become a detective.My papa's bsst friend was the chief of police, and through his influence. I obtained, ,'a position as detective. The first day- the captain told-;me. that a. gentlemanly criminal had ■ escaped—he showed me his picture and he wanted me to catch him: '-1 caught him. On the.way to-.tho .station p'ass-ed a restaurant and the gentlemanly, criminal said that he was very hungry. And, because he was one of the-most lovely criminals I. ever, heard of, I said to him: ' I "Very well; go inside and I will wait for you out. here." ' I must have waited half an hour and he did not come out. So l went; inside and said to the proprietor: "Did you see a gentlemanly criminal ?" 'Why, yes," said he; "he has just gone out tiie back way." So I ha<l to catch him again, the nest day. And oh the way to the station we passed- that' restaurant again, and again he said 'that he was very'hungry. "Verywell," I said, "go inside and I will wait for you." But this , time I was clever and I ran around the back way. I must have waited 'half - an hour—oh! longer. And I finally went inside and asked the proprietor. The gentlemanly criminal had gone out the front way. So I had to catch him the next day; and on the way to the 1 station we passed that restaurant" again. He said he was very hungry. And because he was such a gentlemanly criminal I said: "Oh. very well!" (but, to myself, "This time lie's not going to fool me.") |So I said to himi "I will .go inside and get yon something to eat and you can wait out here." .' . . And then , I became an artist — Hy. The funeral of the late Samuel Coler-idge-Taylor, the well-lmoivn Anglo-Afri-can, com poser, was a very impressive function; The whole of the music used was taken .from his own composition. A movement was played from his violin concerto, and the Funeral March was adapted from the'"Death of Minnehaha." The music also included. "When I am Dead, My Dearest," from the "Six. Sorrow Songs" dedicated by the composer to his wife.
