In a reoent lawsuit regarding tho ownership of a play a stage director testified that in thirty-two years' theatrical experience he had never heard of a play being produced . as originally written. "Tho chief duty of a stage director," ho said, "is meddling with manuscripts. I have even heard of stago directors who tried to improve on Shakespeare by revamping his works." As Shakespcaro himself was a &tago director, ono wonders whether ho took liberties with his own works in Dwsontimr thom.
