TRADE WITH CANADA.
AUSTRALIA "ELBOWED OUT," VANCOUVER SERVICE, \ ByTelecrapli—Prods Association—CoDTi'ißht Sydney Decomber 27. The "Sydney Morning Herald," commenting on the increase of trade of New Zealand with Canada due to the subsidy for the Vancouver mail-service, says the increase .is "unfortunately at .the expense of Australia,' whose. exporters' aro being gradually elbowed out of the trade because they are unable to ( get space for* cargo, and the handicap of having to pay full duty on their shipments, while New Zealanders, under the reciprocity. agreement, get a lebate. . , "We .desire," says tho "Herald," "and as an. Empire Dominion, We ought to have, a far larger share 1 of the Canadian market than we possess. It is to be hoped that the. projected visit of the Canadian trade ambassador will be used by the Commonwealth Government to, the fullest advantage. We have no desire to interfere with New Zealand enterprise devoted to. New Zealand development; but it is plain that Australia at present is unduly shut out of Canadian communication. We 'must come once more into effective touch with that lost zone of trade. Whether it be by-means of a new independent .service remains for the decision of the Government."
