LAWN TENNIS.

' [BT Tooxeaum."!

Last Saturday's Play. The only match played, last Saturday was that between Victoria College anil Wellington, in tho menjs :senipr. grade. Both; entered strong, teams, and an exceedingly close contest- took place. Bi'cto, of Victoria College, "started - oft against H. Brown, but tell somewhat ousihv Brown proving too aggressive for liim. ' Clegliorn, a really good player, had u complete walk over in his match with Ward. The latter is .an equally good player when in form, but unfortunately lor Wellington this was not the case on ,Saturday,, ■ ■ , i In the doubles, however, Ward shone out conspicuously, and, playing with Sampson, won- comfortably against Beere and i)e la Mare. Parker came to light very ■ strongly against Fernie, a safe player.. After "set all" had teen cnlled, Parker inado few mistakes, Tomping home in tho third set quite easily. Do la Mare was , playing well, but did not keep up his fom in the third-set. • r ' , The first double provided 'the keenest match of the day, tho College nair, Cleghorn and Parker, combining well. In tho. second set, Wellington's. representatives,. Brown and TVrnie, Jed 4- —1- They should have won-that set easily, but tli6 other pair were not to be denied, and, setting a great pace, worked off Wellington's lead, drew level, aud then won tho set by one game. This was, indeed, a creditable performance, both sides occasionally playing really good tennis. Cleghorii should bo specially mentioned, possessing as lie does "an" exceedingly good fast serve, the second beiii" sent down equally as fast as the first. Very, few players oan lay claim to such proficiency in tho service. With practice and experience ho should soon ba'heard well of in higher grade tennis. By tho time that these notes appear, Wellington players at Hastings'will have been "in the thick of it," and playing well it is hoped. Full reports of the matches there have appeared already, and comment must necessarily be held over until next week, when final results will havo come through.

Fisher's Recovery at Auckland. It appears that P. M. B. Fisher put up a great performance in Auckland on Monday, when playing with Ollivier against Lowe and Beamish. Wo all know how very brilliant this player, can occasionally be, and it is pleasant to find that oil this occasion he was at his best, especially after the seemingly one-sided matches ilayeil on the previous Saturday against the Englishmen. As our representatives make a closer acquaintance with the play of the Davis Cup heroes they will no doubt gain confidence, and show what they aro really made of.

, Pleasant Little Outing. ' Local players who were unable to leave town .had fl pleasant little tournament arranged. for them during the holidays at Day's Bay. These little tournaments always have a good effect.

When the English Come to Wellington. A: L. Berry and C. A. Lawrence intended motoring to Hastings 011 Christinas Day to witness the championships. Mr. Berry has ths arrangements' for the Englishmen's visit here woll in hand. Everyono who takes the slightest interest in what wc tenuis players like to think of as "the king of games" should avail themselves of this great opportunity to 6eo the world's b?st 111 action at tlio Thorndoii Club's oourt3 011 January 1 aud 8 nest,
