LAWN TENNIS.

FIRST DAY'S PLAY. NEW ZEALAND CHAMPIONSHIPS. THE EXPECTED HAPPENS. (Erj Telegraph.—Press Association.) Napier, December 28. Tho weather was splendid for the opening day of the New Zealand tennis championship meeting. Bright sunshine prevailed throughout the day, and there wns no hind to interfere witn the play. In fact, it was ideal tennis weather, except that players complained now and then that the light was most peculiar. Representative players were present from all parts of New Zealand, including F. M. B. Fisher, captain of .the New Zealand, team, who met the Englishmen, and also Ollivier, the present holder cf the championship. Miss 'Nunnelly, the well-known lady champion of 18U5 and 1907, was present, but not playing.

The play from tho start was most attractive, and shows a high . standard of interprovincial tennis. The' ladies' play was specially good. Miss Travers,. in playing with Fisher against Webber and Miss IT. Wellwood, was brilliant, and her back-line drives and cross-court work evoked loud applause. Miss Hartgill also showed splendid fcriu. Her vigorous forehand drives take a lot of. handling, and, except for a little nervousness, sho can rely on having a big say in the prize list. Miss It. Wellwood, one of Hawke's Bay's Lest players, was clearly not up to previous form. She played well, but lacked the vigour of her previous performance. > *

Thero were some good battles between the men, but, as will be understood, on the first day it is merely a matter of clearing the decks for action. Nevertheless, thero were good struggles. Tipping (Hastings) surprised and delighted his friends bv his performance against Fisher. He went down 13 to 11, 6—3, 6—3, but he fought all tlie way, and never last bis smile. Brown and Harman played most attractive tennis, the former showing up muck better in his single than in double harness with Fisher against, Ehbett and Tipping. The xeteran Goss also gave Peacock a hard struggle for victory, and the whole five sets had to be played out. Fisher, on being interviewed, said the courts and arrangements left nothing to be desired, and he prophesied that the Englishmen would give the finest exposition of tennis seen in New Zealand next Monday. The results were as follow:— Men's Singles. " ' H. W. Brown beat N. A. Duthie, G-d, 6-0, C-0. Harman beat A. 0. Wellwood, 2—6, G—o, 6—l, 0-0. Pencocw beat Goss, G-3, 2-6, 6-i, 2-G, G-3.
