Meetings have been .held in London between Lloyd's and company underwriters, to consider the bast means ,of meeting the changed conditions in the shipping industry, due to tile already increased value of vessels and the advance in the cost of repairs, raising tho values or rates of fiteamers insured for time, nnd limiting the amount of disburesmontfi allowed to he insured to a fixed sum. One proposal is to the effect that there should to a 10 per cent, disbursement clause, the effect of which would he to compel owners to value their stcamow in the policy at a figure equal to their market value. This course was adopted in the case, of American huUs, and has proved effective; but it was felt that the proposal bv itself would not Eolve tho difficulty for British hulls... The other proposal, and one likely to receive the largest measure of support, is to Eccure a 6mall increase in'tho rate. That underwriters have some reason for this action will not bo disputed. ■It is admitted that the cost of repairs has increased at Icaei 30 per cent, while the values of new tonnage show an increase of something like 25 per cent. Underwriters, therefore, find themselves between the iipr)er and nether millstones, from which they hope- to be delivered'. .. .
