BOBRIKOFF'S CUP. SOLTANO WINS THE GREAT NORTHERN FOAL STAKES. .RECORD INVESTMENTS. (By Telegraph—Press Association.! Auckland, December 26. The Auckland Racing Club's Summer meeting opened to-day at Ellerslie, in perfect weather. The attendance constituted a record for a Cup meeting, fully 31,000 being present during the day. The course was in perfect condition, and the times generally were good. The totalisator handled £54,479, as against £48,002 10s. for the corresponding day last year.. The investments on the Cup totalled ,£11,402, which is a record for New Zealand. The newly-appointed stipendiary stewards
were present, but their duties were very light, there being no objectionable features. On returning to the scales, after winning the Cup, Bobrikoff was accorded a great reception,. the cheering lasting for quite two minutes. Results:— SHORTLAND PLATE, of 275 soys. One mile. i Mr. J. Turning for home Devastation was in front, but, opposite the stand, Royal Irish and Watchchain challenged. Royal Irish passed the post a nock, to the good, with Watchchain half a length away. Merry Eoe was quickest away, but was soon supplanted in the lead'by Soltano, Mowbray, Jason, and Nightwatch being in the reaT. With two furlongs covered, Soltano was leading Martel by two lengths, with Merry Roo half a length further back. Turning into the straight Jason improved his position, and neaddd Martel, but Soltano stalled off tho challenge, and won easily by two lengths. Merry Bee was a length away, and Mowbray fourth. Ngatiruanui, Tiresome, and Bobrikoff were then handy. When the straight was entered, La Reina nrid Bobrikoff wero on terms, and the two cleared away from the field. La Iteina stuck gamely to her task, and a desperate raco resulted, Bobrikoff eventually winning by a neck Midnight Sun was eight lengths away, followed by Bon Ton, Ngatiruanui, Tireseme, Semolina, Royal Soult, Domino, Goldfinder, and Masterpiece. | Waiorewa was first away, attended by Cioldsize, but, with two furlongs covered, Ventura and Culprit were in trout. Tho pair led on to the straight, Culprit going on to win easily by half a length. Goldsize, who finished well, heat Ventura bv a neck. Our King was last. Time, lmin." 15 sec.

Master Wairiki was left at tho post, while ScoTch got badly away, being last when the first furlong had been covered. First Wairiki was in front half-way down the straight, but was unablo to stall off Labour Day and Dido. The first horse .won by a length and a half, and the third was two lengths away.
