N.S. WALES TEACHERS.
A WIN BY FOUR WICKETS. Napier, December 26. The touring team of New South Wales school teachers commenced a match against a Hawke's Bay eleven at Hastings yesterday. The weather conditions were all that -could t be desired, and the wicket was in excellent order. The home team batted first, and succeeded in compiling 162 runs, the principal scorers being Board 37, Smyrk 34, Brownette 24, and Nlson Id. Freeman was the most successful bowler, taking six wickets for 61 runs. Harvey took three for 28, and Barnes one for 19.. .
The visitors opened badly, and had lost six wickets when 50 was hoisted. The fielding of the home team then fell away unaccountably, and a - partnership betwen Rose and M'Mullen added 118 for the seventh wicket. : The innings closed for 221. The chief scorers were Rose 79, M'Mullen 57, Harvey 19, Barnes 17, and Walshe 12. Smyrk took five wickets for 62 runs, Creed two for 26, Nelson two for 49, and Pulton one for 53.
On going in to bat for the second time Hawke's Bay lost three wickets for 113 before play ceased for the day. -
The match was continued to-day. The wicket had suffered from the previous day's play. Hawke's Bay resumed batting, and the wickets soon began to fall quickly. The ' innings realised 160, the chief scorers being Board 42, Creed 24, Baulnois 28, and O'Brien 20. The wickets were taken by Freeman (five for 95), and O'Neill (five for 42).
Requiring 102 to win, New South Wales, after losing three wickets for 25, finally soored their win for the loss of six wickets, the 'final result being mainly due to the steady and finished display of Harvey (45). ■ He was badly missed in the slips before reaching-double figures. The other double-, figure scorers .were Smith 21, Rose 11, and Myers-10. Nelson took two wickets for 21 runs, Smyrk two for 24,' Creed one for 13, Fulton one for 14.
The visitors were the • guests of the Hawke's Bay Cricket Association at luncheon on both days.
