Otago, was commenced at the Carisbrook ground to-day. The wicket and outfield were in, good order, and the day was fine, with a' fairly strong breeze. There was a fair attendance. Canterbury won tho toss and went in to bat, Caygill and Norman opening. With the total at 7, Norman was bowled by Downes. Sims came in, and poked one up to Siedeberg at cover. Hiekmott joined Caygill,' only to see the latter edge one into the slips to Eckhoff. Hayes took his place at the wicket, and both men played, carefully. Hayes brought up 20 off Downes with a clean drive past the bowler, but, two runs later, Hayes was stumped by Chadwick when stepping out to Downes. Patrick joined Sandman, who lifted Downes over the rails for six, but, at Gi, Patrick was bowled by Torrance. Carlton filled the gap, and the game commenced to grow more lively, Sandman opening out to both Torrance and Downes. With his score at 32, he put up a short one to Baunerman at square-leg, but the fieldsman was a trifle late, and Sandman continued to score freely until he lifted Downes high to Torrance, and , was held. Sandman had been at the crease for 55 minutes, and had scored 47, including one six, three fours, and five threes. Bennett joined Carlton, who did not appear to be at home. After scoring six, tho former was bowled by Eckhoff. Boxshall'was the last man in, and presently gave a chance to M'Farlano off Downes, and ,tke innings closed for 137, after an hour and 50 minutes' play, Carlton being not out with 30. ' Austin and Hopkins opened for Otago. With the score at 21, Austin got his leg in front to Reese. Siedeberg joined Hopkins, and the score mounted quickly. Considerable interest is being taken in tha cricket match to bo played between Wanganui and North Taranaki and which starts to-morrow. The Wanganui team will not be as strong as that which defeated South Taranaki last week, neither Butterworth nor Bernau (both of whom did well) being available. Still, it is a good sido and an interesting game should result. The fine score compiled by Butterworth in the match' at Palmerston North against the.N.S.W- teachers is further evidence as to his excellence as a batsman. In Orton Wanganui also possesses another batsnmn of the best class and some consider him superior even, to Butterworth.. There are several other fine batsmen here just now while, on their recent form, Bernau and Holland-are in the first flight of bowlers. Altogether, .Wanganui could put a very strong team in the field, and many would liko to see the best eleven, play Wellington this eeason. N.S.W, TOUR ABANDONED. DIFFICULTY 'AS TO EXPENSES.
