MERCHANT SERVICE AWARDS LAPSE.

An. acute position has arisen in tho trade. Tho High Court, as stated
n few days ago, lias declared invalid the award obtained by tho Merchant Service Guild of Australasia on the ground that there was no. dispute extending beyond the limits of one State, and tho old State award in New South Wales, which has now expired. Tho result is that captains and officers, both in New South Wales and tho other States of Australia, ore without a legal award covering the conditions of their employment.
The coastal shipowners in New South Wales recently intimated that they woro willing to meet tho guild in conference. The, guild replied agreeing, ' provided wages and conditions were discussed. '■...To. this the shipowners have not replied." The guild Relieves it possesses , thomoral and active support of the seaside unions. ■
