MAGISTRATE'S COURT.
(Before Mr. W. G. Riddel!, S.M.) DIFFICULT ARREST. CONSTABLE AND FIREMAN. AID BY TAXI MEN. Matters arising out of the arrest on Saturday night of a man near the l'eatlierston Street taxi-cab stand were before the Court yesterday morning. . John Alfred Blaekmore, ships fireman, was charged with having resisted arrest by' Constable Barton, who had apprehended him for insobriety. Constable Barton stated that Blaekmore had behaved Tory violently. It had taken witness a quarter of an hour to get bira under control. , Defendant was fined £Z, and was ordered to pay £1 2s. '6d., the amount of damage done to the constable s uniform. James Childs was then charged with having incited Blaekmore to resist arrest. Child! pleaded not guilty, and he was dofended by Mr. P. W. Jackson. Constable Barton gave evidence to the effect that a crowd had gathered at the corner of Feathers-ton Street and Lambton. Guar, and that Childs had said to him: ''Give him a fair deal, you cow. During his efforts to arrest Blaekmore, someone caught him by the shoulder, and on looking round ho had seen Childs standing behind him. Childs was pushed away .by some taxi drivers who were rendering witness very valuable assistance. Blackmore would not have given the same amount of trouble if he had not been incited. Witness had ultimately down his whistle, and Detective Dempsey had come to his assistance. , To Mr. Jackson: I will not swear that he either touched mo or touched Black-mFra'nk-Wilson and John Arthur Beid, taxi drivers, gave evidence. Wilsons statements were to the effect that he had eeen Childs interfere. Held said that there were a lot of half-drunken men about who appeared to want to interfere, but he had not seen Childs there prior to the moment of his arrest. His Worship: On the charge as Uud there is not-sufficient evidence, but there is sufficient to show that he committed an offence. I consider the evidence sufficient to show that he interfered with the constable while the latter was executing his duty He will be fined .83, and ordered to pay witnesses' expenses, Bs.
/ "HAD A BEAL GOOD TIME." , -indrew Olson, a wan of 56 years of age, pleaded guilty to a charge of having stolen a, suit of clothes from a doorway of lo A Sub-Inspector Sheehan stated,that at about G o'clock on Saturday evening Olsen had been seen to take the clothing, and a constable had been informed, The - constable had come up with Olson just as tholnttci- had boon about to take the snft into a second-hand d<M.or's shop. Oken had said the suit was his own, and hail added that ho had just como to town, la had a real good time, had spent .£3O, n \ul was going to "raise tho wind. Drink! SiiS the Sub-Inspector, was Olson's trouble. , 6ls»n was convicted and ordered to appear for sontenco when called on. OTHER CASES. Thomas Clarke was fined £2 on a charge of the theft of clothing and -bedding, valued at £o, belonging to Robert Dowden. Augustus Crane was fined .62 for having disobeyed a maintenance order. Alick Johnston was adjudged the fatner of a certain child.
