PROTECTION FROM QUACKS.
REGISTRATION OF VCTKMNAKY SUUGJ3UNS. Some legislative measure which will clearly define tho status of veterinary practitioners is, siys Mr. 0. •!. Kraltf', in the annual report of the Department: et Agriculture, becoming wore 'mid more a necessity. At the end of March there were 51 members of the Uoyal College of Veterinary Surgeons in New Zealand, as well as others holding veterinary qualifications. Continuing, Mr. Kcakes says:— "The increasing value of live slucl; creates a demand for skilled veterinary services; and. quite apart from the point that members of an honourable profession should in justice receive adequate recognition and protection from the State, it is necessary not oniy that stockowners should I>»'protected from being exploited by arrant quacks, but also that theiy interests should be considered, and skilled assistance 1m made available for them by encouragement being given in good men to settle in the country for tinpurpose of practising their profession. At present the lack of iiny .State recognition of the status of property qualified men acts as a great deterrent to this, and I would commend this question to the earnest consideration of the Government. I, have no desire to penalise honest, wellintentioned, unqualified practitioner.*, who have done, and arc doing, good work according to the extent of their knowledge. I consider that their interests should be adequately safeguarded, and it should he easily possible to frame a measure which would ensure this, and at this same time place the whole question upon a proper footing. - i
