BOWLS.
- A PERFECT DAT. ■•The interest in bowls always quickens as the festive year-end season approaches, foi it heralds the advent of tlie tournament season in which every keen bowler rejoices. The most familiar affectation among bowlers is a disposition to regard' a tournament as too much "fas," yet invariably the names of those players who assume a dislike for tournament play.are found among tho entries when nominations close. The first,-.end to local bowlers the most, important tournament to happen is that promoted by tho Wellington Bowling Centre to be played on January Tend 2 (Wednesday and Thursday of next week). Sixty entries have .been Kceivcd-r-six sections'of ten rinks'each number which should inako a comfortable tournament to handle. Mr. T, Churchward, the centre's energetic secrotary, always works hard to make the tournament most enjoyable, and all playera who have experience will readily acknowledge that the centre's tournaments are splendidly run. It is with regret that bowlers will learn tha,t Mr. Churchward' does not intend to continue the duties after the present season. The Northern Bowling Association's . tournament commences, in' Auckland on.January 6. Ninety rinks have' entered, ten less than lust year (when tie tournament was held iu Wellington), a formidable number when it.is considered that-fully half, if not more, of the rinks will be visitors from outeido Auckland city. Mr. J, J. Robert's (the association's• energetic secretary) will proceed north this week to complete, the arrangements in connection with the tourney. As amalgamation with the New Zealand (South Island) Association is ininiinent, it is pretty certain that this will, be the :final ( tournament held under the banner of theN.B.A.. Some sentimental regret .will. be "felt -because .of that, but seeing that it. is in ■ the best interest of bowls, the regret ; should be a vain one. The conditions for play, on Saturday ivere perfect. The hot kiss of a belated summer-wag. in the sunshine, and hardly a.cloud, was to be.seen. For once the wind was'-passive.
