CARTERTON ITEMS.
Tho annual picnic under tlie auspices of St. Mark's Sunday School was held hi Mr. Gray's tush at Taratahe on Thursday afternoon, and proved a very enjoyable function; ■: The second event in the Carterton Fire Brigade Shidld competitdon resulted in a win for No. 1, Lieutenant JfKenzioV team, which ran the five-men lumper event in 39 s,ec. Captain M'lCenzie's team •vas second, and ' Lieutenant Jackson's team third. A dwelling belonging to Mr. George Warrington, and occupied by Mr. Fred George, was totally destroyed by fire on Thursday afternoon. It is surmised that « defective chimney was the cause of the outbreak. A quantity of the furniture was salvaged, there being no insurance on the contents. The Phoenix office held a risk of £K0 on tho building. The public schools in this district "broke up" for tho summer vacation on Friday. Mrs. Purakau, a Native woman, belonging to Carterton, met with an unf*'t«nato accident on Saturday morning. She was -walking along the main street carrying a baby, when she suddenly stumbled and fell, breaking her leg above tho ankle. Tho stables on Mr. E. W. Nunn's property at Longbush were totally demolished by fire on Friday evening. Fat stock buyers have been very busy in the Longbush district during the past Week, and as a result large quantities of stock are leaving the district. As the tension of tho Wellington Harbour Board's sheds is now somewhat relieved, the railway station hero is receiving wool for transport as usual.
