"PROPOSAL TO HOLD GRAND ■ CARNIVAL. ' ' ' ■ There is a movement on foot to hold a big sports gathering on the Newtown Pari, with tho object of raising revenue for the purpose of beautifying the city. , reserves. The Mayor (Mr. D. M'Laren) invites all those interested m sports to attend a meeting to be held, in the Mayor's room on Monday evening next, when the matter is to be fully discusstd. In conversation with Mr. M'Laren yesterday, he said that the object is to make arrangements for a grand carnival on the Newtown Park; for the purpose of raising funds towards, beautifying the sports grounds of the city. A large number ol . prominent sports officials' have intimated to the Mayor their intention of being present at the meeting. An invitation to attend is extended to all those interested in the movement.
