NEW GOVERNOR ARRIVES.
THE CITY'S WELCOME TO LORD LIVERPOOL.
YESTERDAY'S CEREMONY.
Tho new Governor of New Zealand, the Earl of Liverpool, arrived in Wellington by special train from Auckland yesterday. Ho was welcomed at the station by the Mayor and Corporation, of Wellington, and by Ministers of the Crown,' and at 3 p.m. he was sworn in as Gov-' crnor of tho Dominion. The ceremony took place in front of tho Government Buildings, in the presence of a largo ooiicoursa.of people. ■ . All Government offices, the British and German men-o'-war, all tho merchant , shipping in port, and many places of business were gaily decked with bunting in honour of the occasion, but generally the town did not wear tho appearance of;high holiday that it would have worn on such an occasion at another timo of year. Tho Mayor had invited business people, to close their establishments in tho afternoon, but it will Lo Christmas Day next Wednesday, and most places of business are working overtime. Consequently there was no general holiday. Many thousands ■ of people found tini.j to see his Excellencyas lie passed by, and to cheer him, may- . , hap, but tho.number of people who could, afford the 'time to be present at the cere- 1 mony at Government Buildings was relatively small. For the same reason ,'the- : parade of Territorials, who lined theToute of his Excellency's carriage along Lamb-, ton Quay, was-somewhat disappointing,' but, again, employers can ill-afford to; gpare raon at this season. , The weather until quite late into tho morning was unspeakably tad. A- boisterous northerly wind was- accompanied., " by ceaseless driving rain, but suddenly tho clouds broke aud wero dissipated, and tho sun elione out. When his -Excellency arrived the sky was cloudless, and tho wind had moderated considerably. The welcome accorded to the new Governor was a cordial, though perhaps' not . a very demonstrative, one. The only, rudenes.? to which his Excellency waa \ subjected camo from a battery of press/c photographers, who stalked his Excellency.. (;: in a most Buamelese way, and with arty, altogether disgusting disregard for. goottv manners, to get snapshots at close range;, y Apparently it was nobody's special Vast*, t ness to protect, his Excellency from this annoyance, and while he was occupien. and unable to escape, these men pushed, ( their instrjments up to within a iawv feet. This happened both at .the \.tm way station and the Government Build., ings. . ' ■.■ ;
