Kokortsoff, in addressing the Duma, said Russia was unable to remain indifferent as to whether or not tlie allies obtained conditions in consonance with their achievements, and the blood they had shed. : It was premature to discuss the means by which any. particular question could be settled. The Powers had the most powerful reasons for preventing complications. He wel-. corned the British initiative in holding a preliminary discussion, and believed that this would facilitate a solution of the crisis. A SIX HOURS' BATTLE. REPORTED TURKISH VICTORY. (Roc. December 19, 8.30 p.m.) Constantinople, December 19. An official report states that a sixhours' battle occurred on the Souliedagh Hills, near Yanina. The Turks and Albanian auxiliaries defeated the Greeks, The latter had four hundred killed, and abandoned three quick-firers and many rifles. TURKISH STRONGHOLD ATTACKED. FORT BIZANI IN DANGER. Athens, December 18. The Greeks attacked a Turkish stronghold, Fort Bizani, commanding the Janina Road. After a desperate all-day fight the Turkish batteries were silenced by the Greeks. A shell exploded a magazine. . The Greek right wing is advancing on Bizani. GRAECO-BULGARIAN RELATIONS. ATTEMPT TO SUPPRESS NEWSPAPERS. . Salonika, December 18. The Greeks have attempted to suppress two Bulgarian journals which were publishing articles embittering, the GraecoBulgarian relations." Cretan gendarmes found the offices guarded by Bulgarian sentries. The population became panic-stricken, fearing a quarrel was imminent. The Bulgarian authorities ultimately withdrew the sentries. . The "Zeit" states that Servia asks (Jreat Britain to temporarily occupy. Durazzo and Alessio, pending a settlement; of the Austro-Servian dispute. AMERICAN MEDIATION. NOT FAVOURED IN WASHINGTON. Washington, December 18. The State Department is against the proposal for American mediation in the Balkan war, holding that as complex questions are .involved they would lie better settled , by the parties closely concerned.
