NOTES AND COMMENTS.
[By. Glencob.] Nothing is goin» better on the Awapuni tracks than Gladiole. It is considered certain that the chestnut mare wjll contest the Palnierston-North Stakes, in which her most dangerous opponents may be the Welcome and the Feilding Stakes winner, PeroniUa. Lucerne, half-sister to St. Toney and Makara, whose record so far is two wins out of three starts, has beeii allowed to forfeit her Taranaki engagements in favour of Awapuni. The mare has been paid up. for. in both the Gillies Hack Handicap and the Hack Welter, but will probably start in the' latter ■ event only. . Prince Eddie,.the, big bay. gelding by ■llerriw'ee, in' J.' M*Latighlih"s' stables at Napier, has been, doing a lot , of useful work on the tracks at Greenmeadows lately, and will \,s sent to Awapuni to contest the hurdle racoon, Boxing Day. He is a typical' hurdle horse, and should do well over the . battens.. Another of M'Lau'ghlin's team—-Boyal' Scout—is ; also to make the trip, and will be a runner in the Juvenile Handicap for two and three-year-olds. • ' Acceptances received for the Manawatn Cup are very satisfactory,. and a good contest should result. The other events have also filled well, but, in the Palnierston North Stakes, several horses have been left in by mistake. Amongst these are the Stead-owned Bon' Eeve, Culprit, Bandiera, Somniform, and Culture. The first-named two are now on their way to Elloralie, and the others are at Taldhurst, ami likely to. remain there. The likely starters.'in the race are: Peronilla. Styx, Vibration, Ermengardo, Gladiole, Ladify, and Bonny Helen.' ' Bobrikoff was freely mentioned yestertlnr in connection with the Auckland Can. Shying has.not beeii a strong forte with the Finland' gelding in the past, and there does not seem to be any good reason for supposing, that he has improved in this respect. Were the. race to be a slow one, he might prevail, but the presence of good three-year-oHs in the race wjll not make for a slow pace. B-. O'Conuell, with Bon Toil. Bon Eeve. Los Angelos, Culprit, and Oxenhope, passed through. Wellington yesterday on his way to Auckland. The horses are. all well, and the Messrs.-Stead should win some of the \A% prizes , during the Ellerslie campaign. Culprit is bigger now than previously, but she bears evidence -of having done a lot of'woTk. . . . A. Gray, who has filled the position of. private trainer to Mr. F. S. Easton, of Foxton, for some time past, has given up his charge of the .horses, - ; and intends to set up as a public trainer, probably, at Awnpuni. -. Eoyal Marine has been/on the Mapourika since 3. p.ni; on Tuesday, and if the vessel does not get away to-day the geldin" will probably be taken off and shipped to lyttelton.by .the : Mararoa this evenin?, and then taken overland to the West Coast. . • ' The finnl. payment for the Auckland .Cup is due to-morrow, when it is ex- ■. 'pectwl that several of the tail division I will drop out. G. Absolum's pair, Waimangu and Santa Eosa a-re bothi more or | lejs unsound, and will probably be allowed to forfeit their enffagemenfs. Mr. Bidwill's'colt Vocation has been i withdrawn from all engagements at _ the Tanherinikau meeting, owing to injury sustained to his back wlien at Feildinir.
