MT. LYELL DISASTER.
NO COMPLAINTS FROM THE MEN. By Telegraph—Press Association—Copyright Hobart, December 18. At the inquiry into*- the Mount Lyell disaster, Mr. Murray, engineer to the Lyell mines, in his evidence said it was untruo to say that the other ways of getting out of the North Lyell mine than the main shaft were blocked. Shift bosses had instructions of which the first was that the safety of the men was alwnys to l>e the initial consideration. The men had a Grievance Committee, but sever were any complaints made. Mr. Curtain, Inspector of Mines, deposed that he visited the mine three days , before the disaster. He travelled by the passes and stopes to tha thousand feet level without using the main shaft. The men could have used these if the fumes had not overcome them. \ Three miners declared that they tried and found the passes blocked!
