The rates paid by the Government to foster-parents for tho care and upkeep of children boarded out are to bo raised on and after January 1. At present the fees paid are 7s. per week for all children under 12 years, and Gs. per week for thoso aged between 12 and 14 years. The new rates to bo payable from the beginning of the year will be 10s. per week for ohildron under 12 months, 9s. per week for children between 12 and 18 months, nnd Bs. per week for those aged between 18 mouths mill 14 years. In ■future, alsu, outfits are to be provided with eatlh child boarded out. Tho "New Zealand Herald" states that the increased rotes have been decided upon largely through the representations of Miss Jackson, of tho Auckland Industrial School at. Mount Albert. The lady pointed out some time ago that owing to the increased cost of living it lias beim found well'night impossible for lostor-pnrcnts to keep the children who nrc boarded out with them. Moreover, it has reduced the number of those willing lo "accept the responsibility of providing board and lodging for the boys and girls in need thereof.
