MORE MEN TEACHERS WANTED.

AUCKLAND COMPLAINT,

(By Telegraph;— Press Association.) '■ Auckland, December 18. A proposal in the direction of giving school committees more power than they have at present ia the appointment of teachers was under discussion at the meeting of the Education Board to-day, when Mr. Banks moved: "That in the case of all appointments only one name, viz., that of a teacher or applicant standing the highest on. the graded list, be submitted to the'school committee concerned, with the exo2ption that whenever ' an appointment is open to both sexes, the name of tlife h'iglie'st""fenlale j 'and the name of the highest male on their respective graded lists he submitted to the school-.• committee concerned."

Hγ. Banks, stated that at present thenj. wero 101 more'females than male teachers in the board's employ. • He contended? that every school should be controlled by a man. There were 542 schools in the province, and consequently there should be 542 males in charge of those schools. In 201 schools there should be assistant lady teachers. If his' suggestion were carried out it'would mean that thev wonld have 341 more males in their employ than, female teachers. One reason that there was were not more male teachers was that, the boards had given, preference to lady teachers to take charge of echools at from .£l2O to .£2lO per annum. For these vacancies both male and female teachers should be eligible. Where a man was in charge the discipline was' better and ho would be able to instruct .the children, in drill nnd ' agriculture. ' Further the carrying of his proposal would give country school committees much more power than at present, which was much to ha desired.

Mr. A. B. Harris moved as an amendment that the discussion be deferred unr til a notice of motion by himself covering much of the same ground as Mr. Banks's motion had been brought forward. . '. The amendment was carried and the matter was held over until a further meet ? ing. . ■ .
