ARRESTS FOR DEBT.
Sir,—Referring to your report in Tile .Dominion of December 2, under "A Summary Arrest,'" 1 beg to draw your attention to several inaccuracies, and which 1 ask you to kindly give me space to correct, as this law whereby one can arrest "would-lxi" run-away debtors is a good law. Now as to tho statement ".Mrs. Storey owns freehold property value between jC2OIIO and X 3000," there is absolutely no freehold in the Cook Islands. Sine ow.ns a leasehold'properly left by her late husband, which was valued for probate at under i'aCO value only. The costs allowed by the magistrate were not two guineas in each case, but one guinea. Tho magistrate followed this course, and stated he dismissed the case because plaintiffs were not at hand to prosecute their claims, but they had tho right to again arrest them whed they were in Wellington, but Monday being a public holiday lie would not hold them in custody until Tuesday. Dr. Storey's movements were not known, so that his Auckland creditors only knew he was leaving the colony (from a private source), ami these proceedings were instructed by their lawyer within an hour of learning same, and these people cleared out by the Surrey Monday night. By printing this, which" is only fair to the creditors who arc mourning Monday being a public holiday in Wellington, you will oblige—l am, etc., W. H. GROVE. Auckland, December a.
