WANGANUI JOTTINGS.

GUTTON ST.' CROSSING AGAIN. (By Telegraph— Special Correspondent.) ,■-,'.':;■• Wanganui, December 17. The Wanganui Fruitgrowers' Association has resolved to accept the-scheme of the Postal Department for the distribution of fruit.by mail. ' ..-,.' An incident,in the progress of Gonville is the formation of a. Masonic' Lodge in that district, under the title of Lodge Moutea, The laying of the' foundationstone of the temple for the' new lodge was the occasion -for. a very interesting ceremony in the western suburb to-day. : Good entries are being;received for the Wanganui ' Rifle Association's annual North Island meeting in Christmas week, though it is noticeable that but a very moderate proportion of the entries coming to hand are from members of the Territorial force.

The Wanganui Nursing League has appointed Nurse Auketell, of Wellington, to be district nurse for'. Wanganui. The movement for the'establishment: of the Plnnket Nurse system here is going, ahead very satisfactorily, and it should be in operation very soon. Tho outlying districts aro showing great interest in the matter, and have sent in several applications for a share of the nurse'sservices.

From time to time complaints arise as to .the danger to the public at the Guyton Street crossingand this neglect of the Railway Department to adequately safe-guard traffic. The approach.- of the trains is obscured.-by. a deep .cutting, .through which the line runs/on one hand, and by a • high feiice ■ which completely blocks the view, ion the other; The latest complaint is that.trains rarely whistle till right on the crossing, instead of some distance away, and it is a fact that narrow .escapes are always occurring.' It is stated 'that one resident, living near the crossing,, .made representations., to the, local railway officials on the matter, but'was on]y.:,'laughcd at, for his" pains, ,and . he ■declares . his intention of carrying it further. The public would certainly.' welcome some safeguard to relieve the" frequently dangerous conditions which now exist.
