A PAINTING 'COMPETITION.

Tho Zoo at Newtown.,Park promises to become the hjJtriitSo.f; Wellington's budding artists. 'As the result of a conference between tho exeoutive committee of the Zoological Society and the president of the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts, it has been decided to offer-prizes for the best pictures of the animals and birds in the ever-growing collection at tho Park. Three members of the executive of the Zoological Society—Messrs. E. A. Wright, Castle, and Eockwood—met Mr. Gore, president of the Academy, and agreed to the following scheme:— Section I.—A prize of £!> 55., to be offered for the best study in oils of an animal in the Zoological Garden; tho painting to be of no fower than 300 square inches in size. ■': "■'•-•:•.•;•'•'■ ••' Section 2—A prize of '£2 25., open to students of secondary, technical, and private schools for a study in oils or watercolours of an animal in the Zoo; the painting to bo of no fewer than 200 square inches. Scctin 3.—Prizes of £\ '.Is. and 10s. 6d.. open to children under fifteen years of use,, for the best black and white, or monochrome drawing of an animal in the Zon; the drawing to be. of no fewer than Hi square inches-in size. The judges will be apnornted by the Academy of Fine Arts. There will bo no ■utranco fee.
