A STRANGE STRIKE.
INCIDENT ON THE WHARVES.
An extraordinary strike occurred on the wharves on Monday. A gang of six wharf labourers were working in the No. 1 hold of the tramp steamer Anglo-Mexican, when the foreman, it is stated, spoke sharply to them, -complaining that they were knocking the cargo about. The men resented the rebuke, and tho foreman dismissed one of them. Three of the others thereupon refused to continue work, and left tho hold.
The remaining two of the six men originally in the hold continued to work on, but no others oould be found to take the places of the dismissed man and the three strikers, i Finally, the foreman and some sailors on tho ship turned to and continued the, work through the rest of tho day.
Yesterday morning the strikers and tlio dismissed man reappeared, and applied for -work, but refused to work with the two nion who had continued on.
The upshot of the matter was that the shipping company was, obliged to dispense with the services of the two men who had not struck; one of whom was sent down to some work in Lyttelton.
