Mr. G. T. Milne lias been appointed British Trade Commissioner for the Commonwealth of Australia, in succession to Mr. C. .Hamilton Wickes, who has been transferred to Canada. Mr. Milne is at present completing an inquiry on behalf of the Advisory Committee to the Beard of Trade on Commercial Intelligence into (he conditions and prospects of British trade in Central America, and will proceed to Australia early next.year.
Madame Kirkby Lunn, the English contralto, will arrive from Christcliurch tomorrow morning in order to be present at tho final rehearsal of "Tho Messiah" by the Royal Choral Society to-morrow evening.

The London "Times" of November 8 records the death at Leeds of Mr. John Darks Enys, who for some years had the Castlo Hill Station, in Canterbury. .The
"Times" says: "Mr. Enys was the representative of a family which had been sealed at Enys (Penryn, Cornwall) since the time of Edward I. He was born on Octoter, 1837;. and educated at Helston. Ho resided for many years in New Zealand, where he was a magistrate from ISGS to ISOI, and in 190G he succeeded his elder brother, the late Mr. Francis Gilbert Enys, Deputy Warden of the Stannaries, in tho family estates. Mr. Enys was unmarried."
The Hon. F. M. B. Fisher, Minister for Customs and Marine, received numerous congratulatory messages on Saturday morning—the first anniversary of the second ballot elections of 1911. The Minister appreciated the pleasant reminder by the senders to reform. He tolegraphed during the day his best wishes for the coming festive season.
Mr. J. Fahy, A.1.M.E.E., chief electrician and railway electrical signalling expert, is at presint in Australia on extended holiday leave. • It is his intention while there to visit the different States and make a personal inspection of the electrical signalling systems.
Yesterday was the last occasion on which Mr."A. D. Thomson, S.M., presided over 'the Palmerslon North Magistrate's Court, prior to the assumption of his new duties as a Civil Service Commissioner. Members of the local Bar presented him with a metal tray and silver salver.

Ballot papers are to be issued to members of the'various school committees interested before the holidays begin, and the result of the election will bo announced on January 27.
