Up till Saturday last the total amount placed to tho credit of tho Clyde Redshaw Helief Fund, came to £1212 10s. Several lists are still to come to hand, so that the grand total will be close to £1500. The response rnado to the appeal by. the school children of the Dominion has been magnificent. Schools from Cape Maria to the Bluff contributed to the help of the little fellow who.lost both hands in. a railway accident several months ago. Of the total contributed no less than £925 3s. has come from pupils of New Zealand schools. BRO. EGBERT ON SCHOOL GRANTS. POSITION OF CATHOLICS. Timaru December 16. The report of Bro. Egbert, director.of tho Marist Brothers' School, mentions the injustice to which such schools are subject in, regard to State grants. Apart from the chief grants for salaries and buildings they have : to.pay for the "School Journal," though,, as taxpayers, they help to pay for its production. II all the Catholic schools had to pay as Timaru does, they must bear the entire cost of the production. Then they get no allowance for incidentals nor for school gardening, nor . for freo school books, though.. Catholics help to find revenue for these grants. Reversing tho motto that "the pen is mightier than the sword." however, they are at least: supplied with arms and ammunition. . [ HOLIDAY IN CHRISTCHURCH. ' I Christchurch, December 16., 'Anniversary Day was celebrated as a i close holiday to-day.. The weather was dull. A gathering of Canterbury, pilgrims i was held at Mr. Anderson's, residence. J FIRE AT TAKAPUNA. v Auckland, December 16.A fire at Takapuna destroyed a eevenroomed housa owned by Mrs. Britain, of Thames. ' Palmerston North;.Decemler.l6." , An enthusiastic publio meeting was held here to-night in connection with the Bible-in-schools movement. The Mayor (Mr. A. Nash) presided. The meeting was addressed by Canon Garland, Dominion Organiser, and 6ix denominations were represented. 'A. 6trong committee was formed to further' the movement here, and a Ladies' Committee was also formed with the .same object injriev.. TIMARU'S ANNIVERSARY. Timaru, Deoember 16. •Fine, though dull, weather prevailed for the aniversary holiday. No special arrangements were made in town, except for tho celebration of the Jubilee of the arrival of the Echunga—the second direct emigrant ship to Timaru. Twenty-seven of her passengers were present (including one born on the voyage). Altogether those present, from far and near, and the wives, husbands, and descendants, made up a party of 120. They had lunch together, and spent the afternoon in a social way. .
MINER FOUND SHOT, . . . Dunedin, December. 18. John Henry Stuart, a miner, was found dead by his daughter at bV residence ] at the Kyeburn ■ diggings, with a bullet wound in the forehead, and a nfle alongside the body.. It is supposed to be a, case of suicide. Deceased leaves a family of eight, the youngest of whom is u years of age. ■ DISHONEST, FIREMAN. Dunedin, December 18. \ Henry Wilkinson, a fireman on the steamer Paparoa, was oonyicted at Port Chalmers to-day of embezzling from the ship's cargo, on December 13, at Dunedm wharf, a roll of waterproof tweed, valued at S, the property of the New Zealand Shipping Co. Accused,-who pleaded not guilty, wa? sentenced to three months' hard labour. . TEACHER SHOT IN THE HEAD. Invercargill, December 16..' A feacher named Harold Isaao Selby, aged 35, was brought m from Otautau distnct to-day suffering from a wound m his head, inflioted by a pea-rifle. It is not known yet whether; the occurrence was accidental, but tho wound may bo serious. . SCHOOL' COMMITTEE RESIGNS, Napier, December 16. As a protest against the action of the Education Board in declining to submit the name of more than one candidate tor a position on the teaching staff of the Napier Main School, the committee tonight resigned in a body. i DROWNING OF AN INDIAN. .' Auckland, December 16. A native of India known as Di was fishing from a dingy at Woody Bay in company with three other persons. Water cams over the stern and swamped the dingy. All but Di swam ashore. It was then seen that the Indian was m danger of drowning, and an attempt was made to reach him,-but he sank, and wan drowned befo-o any help could be rendered. . The body of a Tikorangi settler, named Joseph Terrill, was founoVm some thick scrub about half a mile from has .home this morning, with a large wound in he region of his heart, and a butcher s knfenear bv.
