ThiTty-five miles- south of Gobo Island the Federal trawler, which returned to Melbourne last week from ouo of her periodical cruises, encountered a sea of driftwood. It was mostly Baltio sawn timber, with a good sprinkling of boxes like fruit cases. It covered tho surface of the ocean for several miles. "Wo examined somo of the wood," said Mt. Dnnnevig, Fisheries Director, "and found that it was mostly in short lengths, broken and torn to pieces, as if it had been in a very 6ovore storm. One box rooovered was marked 'ship's stores,' and canio from Sydney, and another piece of timber was probably from the flooring of a rowing boat. There were no marks of identification, but, judging by tho growth of barnacles, I should say that tho wood hud been in tho water for about two months. It probably came down the New South Wales coast, or from the cast. I do rot think it came through Bass Straits." Warner'j Ruot-prsof GnritoU ere ajwarf in. fosfoioa.—AdYt.
