Sir Arthur Guinness, Speaker of the House of Representatives, will arrive in Wellington by the Maori from LytteMon. on Friday morning. Mr. A. Guise, late secretary to his Excellency the Governor, and Mrs. Guise leave for Auckland to-morrow, to connect with the Marama for Vancouver.

The Hon. F. M. B. Fisher leaves for Auckland by the first express to-day. He will be present at the reception to be tendered to tho new Governor, Lord Liverpool, at Auckland, but he will not return to Wellington with him. Mr, Fisher proposes to remain in. Auckland to meet the English Lawn Tennis Team, and to play against them in Auckland. He will occupy, his Christmas holidays travelling with the team, arid playing against them at Hastings, ChristcEurch, and .Wellington.

Mr. A. L. Beattie, Chief Mechanical Engineer in the New Zealand Government railways, will retire from the service on March 31 next. Mr. Beattie joined the Railway Department in Otago, in 1876.

The Government Meteorologist (the Rev. D. C. Bates) left for the couth by the Maori last evening.

The death took place at Palmerston North on Saturday of Mrs. Elizabeth Gordon, widow of the late Edward M'Kenna, V.C.

Mr. Ethelbert Ambrook Southce, of Cootainuudra, has been eleoted Rhodes scholar for New South Wales. Mr. Southoe'is 22 years of age. Ho won. a scholarship to tho Sydney High School, entering the University in 1909, where he took his B.So. with honours in chemistry in 1911. As a first-year student he won distinction in geology; second year, high distinction in agriculture,, with honours in agricultural entomology and botany; whilo last year lie won high distinction in chemistry and plant pathology. As an athlete, Mr. Southee is the holder of many distinctions, and is well known as one of, the most prominent all-round men in the State.

Mr. Henry Brose, B.Sc, who ,has five times been selected to represent Adelaide in the inter-University miming competitions, was last week chosen os tho South Australian Rhodes scholar for the year. Ho was educated at Prince Alfred College, and is an Elder scholar of music. He also won the prize for the champion pianist nt the Chamber of Manufacturers' exhibition a year ago. The Rev. Vivian A. Little, M.A., who has been in chargo of;the Helensburgh Methodist Cirouit in New South Wales, has been appointed chaplain on H.M.A.S. Encounter until the arrival of the Sydney, when he will take up similar duties on that cruiser. The death occurred at i a.m. yesterday at his residence, Hobson Street, of Mr. Thomas Arthur, who retired from the position of Railway Traffic Superintendent in 1909. Mr. Arthur, who had only been indisposed for a week or two, was forty years in the service of the Railway Department, and .was very well known in Wollington. He leaves an adult family. The deceased was 74 years of age. The interment will tako place at Invercargill. Mr. Reginald Tingey is at present confined to tho Wollington Hospital, as the result of an injury to tho kneo sustained in a motor-cyclo accident. The members of the Carrie Moore Company left -Wellington for Grcytown yestorday morning. Tho company, which is being strengthened by tho inclusion of Mr. Clifford O'Keofe (basso) and his sister, Miss Cissie O'Keefo (contralto), will appear in Wellington next month. It will bo remembered that Miss O'Keefo won the sacred solo contest for contraltos at tho recent Wellington competitions, whon she sang "He was Despised" (from "The Messiah ) with great taste and feclilij, Mr, O'Keefo is regarded as the best Kama in Cluistohuiok,
