Johnston and Co., Ltd., local agente, ore advised by the Royal Packet S.N. Oompany of tho launching of their steamer Tasman—tho first of two new steamers which are being built' for their JavaAustralia service. The Tasman was launched by Messrs. Earlc's Shipbuilding and Engineering Co., Ltd., Hull, on October 9, and is a single-screw steamer of the following dimensions:—Length, 392 ft.; breadth moulded, 49ft. 6in.; depth moulded, 28ft. 9in. She is constructed of steel, and is arranged to carry water ballast in the ceUiilar double bottom and in peak tanks, having a water displacement of about 9000 tonß. She is the full-deck type, with boat, promenade, shade, and forecastle decks. A social hall. is situated on the promenade dcok, having a grand staircase leading to the main vestibule, first-class Btatc-rooms and dining saloon, the latter being arranged at the fore part of the shade deok. The first-class smoking-room is at the after part of the promenade dock, and adjoining is a saloon bar. The flrst-olass state-rooms are situated on the shade and upper decks amidships, and arranged generally in two-berth cabins,. but no upper - berths. The second-class state-rooms are on tho port side of upper deck amidships-, in three-berth cabins. The second-class saloon is arranged in a house on the after part of the shade deok. A special feature of all the passenger accommodation is the ventilation. Numerous baths, showers, and lavatories, having hot and cold, soft or fresh water for uso by passengers, are arranged. Acommodation has been provided for a dark room for photography. Two largo cabins on the after part of tho upper deck are set apart for tho Javanese servants. A barber's shop, a washhouse, and laundry are provided. In the holds a flroextingulshing apparatus is fitted, supplied with steam from tho boilers. All the cabins are heated by copper steam-pipes and steam radiators. A wiroless telegraph apparatus, with a Marconi station on the boat deck, including rooms for operators, and a waiting-room for passengers is fitted.' The -steam steering gear is the Wil-Bon-Pirrio combined typo, with telemotor control, - having hand gear ■ worked from ■ boat deck aft, and turning quadrant and rudder brake, also an electric tell-tale plocod on navigating bridge, and connected to the after steering station. Six sots of Welin quadrant davits are adopted, and the boat accommodation is ample for all persons on board. The Tasman has two steel masts, two steel dorrick. posts, each complete with Bteel tube derricks, oleveh steam winches, and a direct-acting steam windlass. The propelling machinery consists of triple-expansion inverted cylinder engines, having cylinders 293, 48J, and 80 by 54 In stroke. Steam is supplied by four cylindrical boilers, working at 1801b. Sressure, and fitted mith Howdon's forced raught. Centrifugal pumps ,fced pumps, sanitary pumps, fresh-water pumps, evaporator, refrigerating machinery, and two dynamos will be fitted in the engineroom. The Tasman is expected to be ready early in January, 1913, for departure to Java, from whore she will take the March sailing'for Australian ports; sho will be duo in Ss'dney on - her maiden trip about April 1. Her sister-ship, the Houtman, will follow in June next, and both f.teamcrs, which-are Ideal tropical.tourist vessels, should.prove a success for the 1913 Java tourist season. BOUND FOR THE ANTARCTIC. RUAPEIIU FROM LONDON. Alter an, uneventful passago of 51 days, the Now Zealand Shipping Company's Btoamcr Ituapeto arrived at Wellington from London, at 9.20 p.m. on Saturday. Sho berthed at the Queen's Wharf No. 1 souih yesterday morning. The second officer (Mr. 11. Dawson) reported that the Euapohu left London on October 24, Plymouth October 26, Tenoriffo' November 1, Cape Town November 8, and arrived at Hobart on Dcocmbor 8, leaving again for Wellington on December lp. According to Mr. Dawson the weather all the way out was flue, with the exception of_ a gale in the Hay of Biscay, and another one when the Ruapehu was Hearing Capo Town.. Oaptain 1(. 0.
