NOTES AND COMMENTS.

[Bi Glencoe.] Owners are reminded that acceptances for tlie first day's events at the Manawatu . Racing Club's meeting close to-morrow. ,' Nominations for the Wellington Racing ,Club's Summer meeting close on Friday; Sir George Clifford's team now at Ellerslie'consists of Masterpiece, Brown Owl, Glenfinnan, Nightwatch, Winning Way, and Hcatherbrae. Several horses were, knocked ont by the hard going at Bulls and from other causes. Amongst them were 1 Stepney, Hawick, Daisy Paul, Birkline, and Routine. -Mr.' J. E. Henrys compiled the weights for the Reefton meeting owing to the illness of the. club's handicapper, Mr. J. Noble. The local handicapper, Mr, TJlic Shannon, will act .at Greymouth and Hdkitika. It is reported that S. Reid has been offered the mount on Goldflnder in the Auckland Cup. The San Fran horse is a great stayer, and supporters can rely on Reid to steer him to the . best advantage. . For the first time for many years A. Oliver will not be riding at the Auckland Cup meeting, as the Highden stable has no horses engaged there. Several of the lesser lights of the team will be racinsr at Awajiuni and Marton, and Oliver will be required to ride them. Training operations at Trentham are particularly interesting at the present time, and the principal handicap horses are all , getting ' plenty of galloping. Amongst those (slackened out on Saturday were Merrivonia, Undecided, Sea Queen, Prosper, Odessa, Ceylon, Mira, Obligiant, and Semaphore. ; Acceptances .for the Taratahi-Carterton Racing Club's meeting close on Friday' next. . At the. tMoryen meeting on Thursday ; last, St. Petersburg,._the half-brother to Danube, won the. principal handicap of ten furlongs. The company behind him was very poor, but the performance, shows the horse to be 60uhd, so more may be heard of him. .Peg, Vice-Admiral, Mowbray, and-Mar-tel arrived from Rkcarton yesterday in charge of M. Hobbs, and were railed to Auckland last night. T. long. is getting a few additions to his team at Feilding,.and it is\reported that Mr. E. Short intends sending him a couple of horses to train. Bleriot will'probably be ridden by J. Buchanan in the Railway Handicap at Ellerslie next week. The published statement that. Silver Cliise is to be trained by J. O'Neill is apparently without foundation, for G. Delaney took him back to Feilding at the conclusion of the Rangitikei meeting. ' Trusting to memory (says "Phaeton", in the "New' Zealand Herald"), I think R. J. Mason has been present at Ellerslie every year since he led in the Nordenfeldt—Pulchra colt Label after; the decision of .the Great Northern Foal Stakes in the summer of 1890. While training for the late Mr. Geo. G. Stead, Mason had some great days at Ellerslie, and in 1!)01 and 1902 he turned', out the respective winners of the Auckland Cup and Railway Handicap, while in 16 years he furnished the winner of the Royal Stakes on no fewer than 13 occasions. A local gentleman, who should have a good knowledge of what is intended, states that next session a strong effort will be made to have some of the "wiped out" clubs reinstated, and lie gives' it as his opinion that there,is a majority in the House of Representatives in favour >of this course. ■ ; Owners are reminded that acceptances for the first day's event 6 at the Wairarapa Racing Club's summer meeting close on Monday next. •
