BLOOD HORSES FOR N.S.W. London, December 5. Mr. S. Hordern bought six blood mares at the Newmarket sales to-day, while Mr. H. R. Denison purchased half a dozen mares and a thoroughbred stallion, who is a full brother to Lally, recently sold to Italy for 7000 guineas.
STRAIN OF CITY LIFE. London, December i. The report of one of the medical officers of the Local Government Board discloses that the strain of life in' a great city is weakening to the heart and blood vessels, and causes the death-rate to exceed that of the rural districts.

TOBACCO SHIP ON FIRE. London, December S. The Chinese steamer Wangtsze reports that an outbreak of fire occurred in the hold when off Gibraltar. Fifty thousand bales of Java tobacco were damaged by fire and water.
SWIMMING STANDARDS. London, December 4. Tho Amateur Swimming Association is reducing its time standard by 4sec. for 100 yds., lOseo. for 220 and 500 yds., lmin. for half a mile, and by 2miri. for one mile.
MOTOR-SLEDGING. London, December i. A party of French officers has covered 125 miles of the Sahara Desert on a sledge mounted on six wheels and_ driven by a propeller working in the air.
CHINA'S OPIUM CRUSADE. London, December 4. All the opium shops in Wuchang, capital of the Chinese province of Hupeh, have been closed, and the drug can now be procured from only the Government depot.

Reports.are current in Berlin that diplomatic negotiations of a momentous character, which will tend to bring about a permanent improvement in tho relations between Britain and Germany, are at present''in progress.
